Are Acne Laser Treatments for you?

While the term laser treatments may scare you when put in relation to acne, you should not let them. We have all heard stories of acne treatments in years gone by that were so invasive that the scarring they left was worse than the acne they were meant to treat. Acne laser treatment is not like that however and has been approved with the FDA as a highly effective treatment of Acne.

This type of treatment can be used in one of two ways, as a way to treat severe active acne and to remove the acne scars that may be left over from a severe breakout. Generally this type of treatment is reserved for those with severe acne problems that may not have responded to other treatments; however acne laser treatments have now been used for a few years and are beginning to replace other treatments that may not be as effective or can cause scarring.

In a laser treatment the laser is used to kill the bacteria that is present in acne and used to shrink the glands that are responsible for oil secretion. A laser treatment may also kill the hair follicle since this is the area that frequently gets clogged and causes acne. The last way laser treatment may work is to remove acne scars left behind by a break out. For some scarring is minimal and usually not an issue for others that suffer from severe acne scarring can be traumatic and disfiguring, laser treatment can go a long ways to helping people with this problem.

Laser treatments can be expensive, however they are often a more permanent and effective treatment making them more cost effective in the long run. Laser treatments are normally pain free and very safe, although some people have experience bruising and swelling at the treatment site after the procedure. It can take up to ten days for this to subside and then you should notice the results of your treatments.

Use care when selecting someone to do your laser treatments, while the equipment is regulated who can do the procedure is not. Look for a dermatologist or plastic surgeon that has taken extensive training and is very comfortable with using the equipment. As to see before and after pictures of the doctors patients and inquire about how long he has been doing the procedure. Never go to a “clinic” that offers the treatments as their only service unless you have extensively interview to person giving the treatment and he is a doctor with experience in acne laser treatments.
